Mesh ER: Welding Duplicate Vertices, Clearing Loose Parts & Fixing Non-Manifold Edges

Why must you run Tris-to-Quads, Merge by Distance, and Delete Loose Parts before retopologizing or baking an AI mesh?

TAKE AWAYA Blender `bmesh` mesh pre-processing and non-manifold zeroing SOP.

Across AI 3D cleanup tutorials, creators hit the same trap: feeding raw AI meshes straight into auto-retopology tools produces holes and twisted loops. Although the surface looks continuous, raw AI exports contain thousands of unwelded duplicate vertices, floating interior crumbs, and flipped normals.

The method: three small steps

The 3-step mesh ER protocol (used in Blender Edit Mode and VECTOR’s `bmesh` worker): 1. Convert Tris to Quads (`Alt + J` at `90°` threshold); 2. Run `Merge by Distance` (`M`, e.g., `0.0001m`) to weld split seams; 3. Delete disconnected loose geometry and recalculate normals outside.

  1. Convert Tris to Quads (Alt+J, 90° threshold)

Select all faces in Edit Mode and convert triangles to quads at a 90° angle limit to smooth out jagged triangulation.

  2. Weld duplicate vertices (M → Merge by Distance)

AI generators often leave duplicate vertices along seams; weld them with a 0.0001m–0.0005m threshold to restore a watertight surface.

  3. Delete loose crumbs and recalculate outside normals

Remove hidden floating mesh crumbs inside the volume and recalculate normals outside (Shift+N) to prevent black baking artifacts.

In the bmesh Cleanup Lab below, run vertex welding and loose-part removal on the initial draft of Aegis Vanguard (eb3a0980).

ONE IDEA TO KEEP

Rule #1 before retopology or UV unwrapping: weld overlapping vertices (Merge by Distance) and purge floating loose parts.

Run it in the VECTOR 3D workbench or Blender pipeline
  1. Open a matching reference asset in the VECTOR 3D workbench or your Blender + AI pipeline.
  2. Copy the task sheet below, let AI generate an inspectable checklist or EditPlan first, and confirm before running mesh or material operations.
