Fixing Fragmented UVs: Smart UV Island Margins & Structural Seam Planning
Why do newly baked textures often show ugly black seams or color bleeding along UV borders?
Raw AI exports shatter UVs into hundreds of tiny triangle islands that cause severe MIPMap edge bleeding and prevent 2D paint fixes. After quad retopology clears old UVs, you must unwrap a clean UV layout with sufficient island margins.
The method: three small steps
Two UV unwrapping strategies cover production needs: 1. For props and rapid iterations, run `Smart UV Project` (Angle Limit `66°`) and raise `Island Margin` to `0.003–0.008` (ensuring 8–16px padding on a 4K map); 2. For hero characters and vehicles, `Mark Seam` along hidden creases before unwrapping.
Create a 4K/2K blank Image Texture canvas first
Create a 4096×4096 target image in the UV/Shader Editor so the unwrapper calculates accurate pixel padding.
Mark hidden structural seams or run Smart UV Project
Place seams along hidden clothing folds for characters, or use Smart UV Project on hard-surface props to keep contiguous planes together.
Increase Island Margin (0.004+) and verify zero overlap
Raise Island Margin so neighboring UV islands have ample dilation padding and zero overlapping polygons.
In the UV Margin Configurator below, compare zero-margin fragmented UVs against padded Smart/Seam UV layouts under 4K baking and mipmap downsampling.

Switch to the recommended VECTOR controlled pipeline option to resolve topology, UV, or QA gate errors.
You cannot bake without UVs, and unwrapping without sufficient Island Margin guarantees black seam artifacts at a distance.
Run it in the VECTOR 3D workbench or Blender pipeline
- Open a matching reference asset in the VECTOR 3D workbench or your Blender + AI pipeline.
- Copy the task sheet below, let AI generate an inspectable checklist or EditPlan first, and confirm before running mesh or material operations.
Why should you increase `Island Margin` slightly when running `Smart UV Project` on a retopologized low-poly mesh?
