Stable Part Segmentation & Node Hashing: Turning Monolithic Meshes into Addressable Assemblies

Why must production 3D pipelines use glTF node-path hashes (Stable Part IDs) instead of relying on loose object names alone?

TAKE AWAYA glTF assembly segmentation spec and Stable Part ID mapping table.

If a vehicle like White Widebody Racer (c555ce1b) is a single fused `Mesh_0`, local edits are impossible; if DCC exports rename parts to `Mesh_0.001` across versions, scripts target the wrong mesh. VECTOR combines part segmentation with glTF node-path hashing (Stable Part IDs) and viewport raycast picking for cross-version addressing.

The method: three small steps

Building an addressable 3D assembly takes three steps: 1. Segment meshes along functional and material boundaries (body, wheels, spoiler, glass, calipers); 2. Compute deterministic hashes from canonical glTF node paths so part IDs survive V1 → V2 → V3 exports; 3. Use viewport raycasting to return the exact hit part ID, vertex/triangle count, and material on click.

  1. Segment meshes by kinematic and material boundaries

Separate rotating wheels, transparent windshields, carbon-fiber spoilers, and painted bodywork into distinct glTF mesh nodes.

  2. Generate cross-version glTF node-path hashes (Stable Part ID)

Hash canonical node hierarchy paths so automatic `.001` suffixing during DCC exports never breaks part targeting.

  3. Bind viewport Raycast hits to real part metadata

Clicking the 3D viewport raycasts against actual geometry to return the hit part hash, node path, triangle count, and material slot.

ONE IDEA TO KEEP

Segment first, assign deterministic node-path hashes second, and pick via raycast third—stable part identity across versions is the foundation of local editing.

CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

When a user clicks a 3D model in the viewport to request an AI edit, how do you prevent the LLM from hallucinating a part name that does not exist in the mesh?
