High-to-Low Baking (Selected to Active): Cycles Color, Glossy & Normal Projection

Why does baking an AI model with Diffuse in Cycles sometimes produce a solid black image, and which mesh must be the Active Object?

TAKE AWAYA Cycles `Selected to Active` baking troubleshooting and parameter card.

After retopologizing a 19,000-vertex textured AI high-poly mesh into a 1,200-vertex unwrapped low-poly mesh, the crucial bridge is Cycles `Selected to Active` baking. Three details make or break this step: channel type (Diffuse vs Glossy), selection order, and Ray Extrusion.

The method: three small steps

Three iron rules for High-to-Low Cycles baking: 1. **Bake Type & Influence**: Disable `Direct` and `Indirect` lighting (check `Color` only); if an AI exporter bound its texture to a Glossy/Specular node and `Diffuse` bakes black, switch Bake Type to `Glossy` (Color only) or rewire the high-poly shader; 2. **Selection Order**: Select High-Poly first, Shift-select Low-Poly as the **Active Object**, and click the target blank `Image Texture` node in the Shader Editor; 3. **Ray Extrusion**: Set `Extrusion = 0.05m–0.1m` and `Max Ray Distance = 0` to prevent intersection cage artifacts.

  1. Create and click-select the 4K Image Texture node on the Low-Poly material

Ensure the low-poly mesh has its own material with a newly created 4K Image Texture node actively selected in the Shader Editor.

  2. Switch to Cycles, set Bake Type, and check Color only under Influence

Lower render samples to ~150 for speed, uncheck Direct/Indirect lighting, and keep only Color. If the AI high-poly binds color to Glossy, bake Glossy (Color only).

  3. Enable Selected to Active, set Extrusion=0.1m, select High then Low, and Bake

Check Selected to Active, set Extrusion to 0.1m, verify the low-poly mesh is the bright-orange Active Object, and click Bake.

ONE IDEA TO KEEP

Always uncheck Direct/Indirect lighting for color bakes, make Low-Poly the Active Object, and set ~0.1m Extrusion to prevent ray-miss artifacts.

  1. Open a matching reference asset in the VECTOR 3D workbench or your Blender + AI pipeline.
  2. Copy the task sheet below, let AI generate an inspectable checklist or EditPlan first, and confirm before running mesh or material operations.
