Local Generative Re-Texturing vs Full Re-Roll: Changing Livery Without Breaking Geometry
Once a client signs off on a vehicle’s geometry and part hierarchy, how do you change its paint livery without mutating the wheels or dimensions?
In naive AI 3D workflows, changing textures means re-running generation—which mutates the mesh topology every time. VECTOR strictly decouples geometry from appearance: approved meshes and Stable Part IDs remain locked while local or global re-texturing updates only the material/texture layer in a new derived version.
The method: three small steps
Hybrid material editing optimizes both fidelity and cost: 1. **Parametric PBR tweaks** (glass alpha, rim metallic factor, solid paint): run locally on the Blender Worker at zero API cost; 2. **Complex generative liveries** (weathered decals, ornate embroidery): lock the approved mesh and UVs, invoke generative re-texturing only on target parts (`body_shell`), and log exact API credits in the CostLedger.
Freeze approved mesh vertices and Stable Part IDs
Enforce a geometry read-only lock so the derived version (V3) has zero vertex, triangle, or bounding-box delta against its parent (V2).
Separate parametric PBR tweaks from generative texture synthesis
Handle windshield opacity and solid caliper colors via local PBR parameters; submit only complex body livery to the generative re-texture API.
Log idempotency key, provider task ID, and actual Credits
Guard external API submission with idempotency keys and `submission_uncertain` state tracking, recording actual credits in the CostLedger.
In the Hybrid Re-Texture & Cost Ledger sandbox below, configure a geometry-locked livery update for White Widebody Racer (c555ce1b).

White Widebody Racer (c555ce1b) V2 geometry is approved. Update the body shell to a black-and-gold racing livery and paint the brake calipers red.
Switch to the recommended VECTOR controlled pipeline option to resolve topology, UV, or QA gate errors.
Once geometry passes QA, lock the mesh; use free local operators for parametric PBR tweaks and reserve paid generative APIs strictly for complex texture synthesis.
Run it in the VECTOR 3D workbench or Blender pipeline
- Open a matching reference asset in the VECTOR 3D workbench or your Blender + AI pipeline.
- Copy the task sheet below, let AI generate an inspectable checklist or EditPlan first, and confirm before running mesh or material operations.
When a 3D asset’s geometry and part segmentation have already passed QA and the client only wants a new surface livery on one part, what is the safest engineering practice?
